How To Sing Harmonies On Your Own?

There are several videos floating around on Youtube of people who are getting perfect harmony on songs, but they are the only person singing (e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqn3_5oYcoQ&list=PLF713526EFC56F122 )
I tried putting a mic in front of a speaker playing my voice singing the part, but the mic wouldn't pic it up. Anyone got any suggestions?

1. A few songs' harmonies are just the same part twice, One vocalist and one talkie, or octavated, so they pick up the same.

2. The video you linked to clearly states in the description that he recorded his voice and played it back while playing the song in order to FC the backup parts.
