I know you are not a fan of metal, but you have to add a metallica song. They were one of the most famous and influential metal bands of the 90's and 00's.
Also, good pick for the nirvana song. _________________

I would add Battery and I'd add Man in the Box. Only two I'd change or add really, it's a great list. I personally find it pretty good.
And I prefer Critical Acclaim over Afterlife and Almost Easy. |

Not necessarily, that's more "greatest hits" than "best of" imo!
I think the artist selection is pretty good. I'd probably drop Flyleaf to free up some time, and I'd swap some songs for individual artists.
For Smashing Pumpkins I'd be more inclined to pick Siva or Today. Foo Fighters, maybe Monkey Wrench over Everlong (though Everlong does have more appeal). For the Hives I'd go with Die, All Right! over Main Offender. Iron Maiden... Aces High maybe? For Rush I'd probably pick up Working Man (Vault Edition) though you might need to drop another song to do it. I'd probably trade out Breaking the Girl, though I'm not sure which of three RHCP songs I'd pick in its place.
Overall, pretty solid list. |

In music those are two names for the same thing. _________________

You'd think that, wouldn't you?
I mean other than the fact that many "best of" albums don't include hits and many "greatest hits" albums don't include the best songs that didn't chart as well.
They are indeed both compilation albums with similar content, but the "best of" albums tend more towards the songs that the band thinks are their best (including many hits) while the "greatest hits" albums tend more towards well charting songs (including some of their best).
Admittedly, as the "title" blurb indicates, they're pretty much the same, though bands with lots of hits tend to release "greatest hits" albums (more $$$ that way), but I could probably dig through some of my cassette collection to find some differences. ;)
The Joni Mitchell blurb in that Wikipedia article is a good example:
Wikipedia wrote: | Joni Mitchell also resisted releasing a greatest hits album for many years, reportedly fearing that the availability of a greatest hits compilation would lead her record label to take her actual studio albums out of print, but she agreed to release Hits in 1996 along with a second album titled Misses, which compiled non-hit songs that Mitchell personally selected as being representative of her work. |
Would you be more satisfied if he called this thread "The Essential Rock Band"? :p |

I'll try to (mostly) avoid metal, but in terms of listening, there are only a couple metal songs I'd recommend anyway.
Anyway, it's your list and your tastes, but in my opinion, these are the songs that should be replaced/have other contenders that would work just as well.
Pearl Jam "Alive" - Actually one of my favorite songs, but Jeremy is another great contender.
The Offspring "All I Want" - Ironically the only Offspring song I don't have on RB (not that it's bad, I just put it at a low priority). I think anything else other than Gone Away or Hammerhead would be suitable
Red Hot Chili Peppers "Breaking the Girl" - Under the Bridge or Give It Away would be obvious choices for a Best Of, and personally I like them more anyway
Nirvana "Breed" - One of the best Nirvana songs, but I still prefer Drain You which is a disc song anyway
Foo Fighters "Everlong" - In my opinion DOA hands down. If it must be from the album, go My Hero or Monkey Wrench
The Fratellis "Henrietta" - I personally like Creepin' Up The Backstairs more and would suggest that
The Hives "Main Offender" - Die! All Right is the better choice to listen to if you ask me
R.E.M. "Orange Crush" - Losing My Religion. Such a classic. No competition
Judas Priest "Painkiller" - I personally prefer Screaming for Vengeance (the song), however, you may like You've Got Another Thing Comin' because it's more hard rock than metal
Nine Inch Nails "The Perfect Drug" - Most fun to play, but listening, I think The Hand That Feeds, March of the Pigs, and Capital G all beat TPD
Coheed and Cambria "The Running Free" - Personally I don't like much C&C, so maybe I shouldn't judge this one, but Ten Speed is the only one available that I actually like
Motley Crue "Saints of Los Angeles" - Dr. Feelgood or Kickstart My Heart. Go for the classics, even if the new stuff is pretty good
Iron Maiden "2 Minutes to Midnight" - I would go for Run to the Hills (a disc song anyway), The Trooper, or Aces High personally
The Who "Won't Get Fooled Again" - A classic. Baba O'Riley and Pinball Wizard would work just as well though
Now, here are the notable omissions (that I spotted)
Jethro Tull "Aqualung"
Muse "Hysteria"
Radiohead "Creep" or "My Iron Lung"
Soundgarden "Spoonman" (although, really any of the songs could work)
Kansas "Carry On Wayward Son"
The following are also recommended, but more likely to be hit and miss:
Metallica "Battery" (the only Metallica song I would recommend listening to, although it might be too long for your size limit unless you remove 2 songs)
System of a Down "Chop Suey!" or "Toxicity" (only other metal songs I will recommend)
Franz Ferdinand "Take Me Out"
In exchange I would probably remove as many of the following as needed: Girl's Not Grey, I'm So Sick, Main Offender, Mountain Song, New Kid In School, Outside, The Running Free, Sorrow, Tangled Up In Blue
^^ Although some of those are considered classic, they just bore me ^^
Of course, though, that's just my taste in music (and I even avoided more obscure choices and tried to leave songs that are classic, but decent, because for instance, I love De-Luxe and would take it over the still-catchy Bodhisattva, and would take The Trees over Tom Sawyer any day).
But hey, they're just suggestions, and obviously you should only take 'em if you agree. _________________
