I bought the original RB bundle, but always used the Les Pauls until recently. I played the Strat less than 5 times before having a problem with the downstrum. I tried to open it and fix the issue using this guide, but it didn't work for me.
The other fixes are too complicated for me. I'm just going to RMA it. Thanks for your help though! _________________

so this worked really well but still fast strumming paths are still near impossible to hit. i guess i will be forever using the GH controller. rock band really kinda dropped the ball with the strat it is pretty terrible imo |

Unfortunately, the strum bar for rock band was extremely bad in design. Even with this mod, the GH controller seems to be better, despite its annoying click and small size. |
