I have an earlier version of the Reaper DAW (2.5.8 to be exact). Can I use that for the RBN or do I have to use the latest version?

Yes, you can use that. Likely can't use the lates HMX plug-ins with it, though I can't be sure about that.

It really sucks getting shafted from experiencing this because I refused to by a defective gaming system. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

You're getting shafted because Sony doesn't have the architecture in place that will accommodate RBN.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but college students registered through Dreamspark.com get a free year on XNA (among other benefits direct from Microsoft).

Most universities have an MSDN Academic Alliance subscription which gives free copies of essentially every Microsoft product except Office.

The XNA subscription is also under this.

In other words, any Uni/College students feeling like doing some productive procrastination on their end of year exams can happily go off and make some songs

The XNA membership through dreamspark doesn't include the ability to peer review or submit content. You could use it to author and test on an xbox though.

Wow, I'm really excited for this. If you haven't seen any of the preview videos, go check them out! (preview 2 : http://www.rhythmauthors.com/index.php the song that plays at the end of that video (death quota) looks amazing.

From what I've heard of this, this is going to be huge. I've heard a lot about people contacting artists to inform them of RBN, and if even 1/4 of those artist sign up, I'll be thrilled.

On a more negative note, goodbye, all my money

Although it is preferred for people to have access to all instruments, it is not entirely mandatory since QA will be conducted in a group situation.

Ah, nuts, only a QA position open? I think I have the Reaper and music theory knowledge neccesary to do it, but I don't have the time, 360 and XNA club membership.
