|

9/3 So while there's no tournament, the top 2 guitarists and top drummer, as determined by the Freeplay stage enforcers, will be the opening act for the Saturday night concert playing a not-yet-released track. They're running RB3 at the freeplay stage as well as at the HMX booth.
Red rover Steel Cage matches will continue as scheduled however .
9/1: So far there haven't been enough people who say they're going to support the Hardcore option. However there's enough interest to at least try the Casual option. Currently the plan is for people to meet at the Rock Band Freeplay stage (the one run by PAX, not Harmonix) at these times:- Friday: 11am-2pm (aka "after the HMX panel")
- Saturday: 2-5 (aka "before Wil Wheaton and the concerts")
- Sunday: 1-4 (aka "before the Omegathon finals")
To avoid having the same song played twice in a row, you can play any song off of the song list below for the head-to-head battle. If the Friday attempt is a big dud we'll just scale back to the Extra-Casual option for Saturday and Sunday. You can look for me ... I'll either be dressed as Garth Algar, in matching T-shirts with the rest of No Boston After Midnight, or wearing a T-shirt with the Charlene optimal path on it (Kawigi and ajanata have promised they'll wear equally geeky shirts)
8/30: well, meh. Unsuprisingly, with the enforcer crew generally running at about 80% their usual speed, the bigwig enforcers who run CFP don't seem to have any time to even respond to the RB junkies about letting them do a community run tournament. So at this point, I sort of feel like we have three options:- The Hardcore Option: Friday and Saturday, anyone plays any song from a pre-set list (we've already figure out what songs would be on it). Top two bands on Friday and top two bands on Saturday compete in a 4-team playoff Sunday afternoon. Pros: more intense competition. Cons: more work for me; may be hard to get non-SHers into it; list is DLC heavy so if freeplay stations in the main freeplay room don't have songs, everyone has to wait in line at the freeplay stage.
- The Casual Option: we just have a series of red-rover get-togethers at the freeplay stage. Anyone who wants to play shows up at the specified time, and two teams are formed. Anyone not on the two teams goes in the "free pool". The losing team has to swap out two players for people in the "free pool". If one team wins twice in a row, the losing team can steal one person from the winning team as one of their two picks. There's no real keeping track of winners or anything, just playing for the lolz and to impress the audience. Pros: less time commitment for everybody; easy to have non-SHers show up and join. Cons: less intense competition; more time spent listening to karaoke anthems at the freeplay stage (trust me, by the end of PAX, you will not want to hear any more Pearl Jam, Kansas, Boston, or Journey for about a decade).
- The Extra-Casual Option: no playing for score at all. At pre-arranged times, we all show up and Kawigi hands out "my name on scorehero is _____" name tags.
Please vote by adding a reply if you're going to be at PAX and would be interested in this sort of thing. It's a lot of fun to do these because you get a chance to meet other good-to-great players in the flesh and blood. Personally even though it's more work for me I would rather go for the Hardcore Option, but it only makes sense if there is enough interest. The Hardcore Option is still less commitment than the RB tournament that's been run before which really sucks up huge chunks of the convention all three days.
8/24: If you think you'd be interested in attending some sort of post-PAX SHindig on Sunday, send me or Kawigi a PM so we can get some sort of head count. If you're under 21, let us know if you/your parents are okay with you being around old people who are getting drunk so we can decide if we're going to have booze at this thing.
Currently looking for bands:- Elilasol (vox)
- ynglink's gf (vox)
- pmswedge (vox, bass/guitar)
- Fedora (bass/guitar) -- ?
Attending but either have a band or aren't necessarily looking for competitive play:- ajanata (guitar/bass)
- Kawigi (vox, guitar/bass) -- saturday only
- preppypoof (OMB) -- Thursday RB3 preview only
- Metallica Sucks (Morkai, Skeltonath, arte, and POKE-JJ)
- No Boston After Midnight (ynglink, niq24601, and The Twins)
Other events at around PAX that may be Rock Band related:- According to Yelp/RockBandAide, there's an RB3 preview at Jillians, Thursday 9/2, 8pm to 10pm.
- PAXaoke is happening. Thursday night, at Frances Farmer Organ Karaoke, from 8pm until close. Be there or be a regular quadrilateral.
- The Harmonix panel is first thing Friday morning. It's currently listed as all RB3, no Dance Central etc.
- In addition to the freeplay stage, there will Rock Band 2 (maybe 3?) freeplay be in the Unicorn Theater (611-613) Saturday 9/4, 10pm-1:30. This conflicts with the concert, which is bad if you are into nerdcore/nerdfolk, but good if you want fewer people in line.
- The Post-PAX Party at the Taphouse Grill (1 block from PAX) will have Rock Band. 8/24 Now sold out.
- Some of the PNW SH contingent are tentatively putting together a Sunday night get together. Details to come. (remember that Monday is a holiday)
Song list for hypothetical tournament/red rover. Two bands go head-to-head, each band picks a song from this list and plays it (you can pick different songs). The songs have been selected so that they have similar optimal scores. Hard songs have higher scores, but because they're harder you're more likely to miss.

Alternate mega-song list. To use the mega-song list, both bands must pick songs from this list. They're all high scoring, difficult songs. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to make my way out to Seattle unless something awesome happens between now and then. _________________

Hey, I got mine before they sold out. <_< _________________

Last year it was Skeltonath, Morkai, arte, and elilasol. The year before it was Morkai, Skeltonath, Fedora, and ... eliasol |
One of the funniest parts of PAX East this year was hearing "METALLICA SUCKS" yelled at me from across the room... and it turned out to be the Lead Singer from the other finals band (seen running into the crowd in this video from the post-finals encore from 2008.):

Did you intentionally all have the exact same haircut, or was that just a coincidence? |
We're a boy band, what do you expect. (p.s, I'm the bad boy) _________________

That's why I got run out of the band... I was too old for our target demographic. Kept getting picked up on "corruption of minors" charges. _________________

Niq, how many months out of the year are you not looking for bandmates for PAX?
Hmm, should I actually take the plunge and plan ahead of time to go? _________________

Just wait until they start having PAX South in Houston in November or something. PAX-by-PAX-West in Austin? PAX Romana in Rome? Okay I'll stop now.
