I know it existed before Guitar Hero because I recall reading that it was appropriated from another game.

I think it was DDR, right?

I just got to thinking about this since Rock Band 4 now proclaims "FULL COMBO" when you get one, which reminded me that the term had a different origin from Harmonix's efforts with the genre.

It at the very least dates back to the earliest Bemani games. Beatmania, DDR, Pop'n Music and Guitar Freaks all date back to around 1998. Someone who knows the history better than me might have a better idea of an exact origin.

RB4 is the first time HMX has ever recognized the term, by the way.

The Bemani games were definitely the first time I heard the term used, probably DDR since that was the first one I ever played. My parents live down the street from one of the biggest Asian shopping malls in North America (Pacific Mall in Markham, Ontario) and they had a whole bunch of Japanese music games. My brother and I went there every weekend and hung out with a pretty hardcore group of players, and we tracked our own high scores on a Geocities page of all things back in the day, including "full combo". Good times. I feel old now.
