After not looking anything up on RB4 prior to release. I learned yesterday that my trusty Xplorer guitar or wired drums will not work with RB4. Which really sucks, because now I have to buy the band bundle for all the new kit.

How is the new guitar? Drum set? Any missed notes or anything?

I can't say for certain that it's not just me sucking at the game but the drums seem about as functional as the RB1 set which as many people know was not that well. I'm liking the guitar and I haven't tried the mic yet.

I've got the PAX Guitar and it's been pretty nice so far. However, if you're not a fan of a quiet strumbar it's not for you.

Here's my take on the new instruments:

Philosophically, the guitars are like RB strats have always been. Meaning that if you're hoping for the bulbous raised frets and clacky strumbar of GH guitars, you won't find them. They've been designed with fundamentally the same principles as the previous instruments.

HOWEVER, I would say that if you haven't picked up a RB Strat since the RB1 or RB2 era, I recommend you give them a shot. They're lighter, tighter, and feel far more solid. It's evolutionary, yes. But if you haven't checked up on how far evolution has taken the RB strats, it's worth giving one a shot.

As for the drums, basically the same deal. Incremental improvements that are still noticeable and highly-appreciated improvements. Quieter, bouncier, better kick pedal, etc.

For people just getting the instruments, here's the general advice:

First, DON'T for any reason use the batteries that come with them. Use a name-brand battery. People have reported that this simple change has resulted in a noticeable improvement in the number of dropped hits, missed strums, and general responsiveness across the board.

Second, do the firmware update! The info is on Madcatz' website. Some people have seen big changes, others not so much. But it's there for you to use, so take advantage of it.

I don't even have an Xbone or PS4, but for those who have the new drum set and use a KickWire with a kick pad, do those still work with the new kits?

I like the RB4 Strat a lot more than the RB1 version I last used. The quiet strumbar and weirdly shaped whammy bar are still a problem, but I feel like I can get used to them a lot easier than before. The strum bar isn't as quiet as it used to be at least.

The drums feel about the same to me.

I'm surprisingly very disappointed in all the instruments. I was expecting improvements all around instead it seems like exactly the opposite.

It took me all of 15 seconds to realize the RB4 strat is identical to the RB3 one other than not being able to activate with select (which is worse!) and after not being able to hold a combo I put it down, picked up my 5Tar, and FCd the song.

The drums also don't seem any better than the last stock set I used for RB2, in fact they seem worse. Any hits towards the edge of the pad are ignored, especially on the green. On green it seems anything other than hitting it as hard as I can right in the center is a miss. This obviously makes overdrive a challenge.

The RB4 mic itself isnt too terrible, though it seems to make the arrow skip around alot where my RB1 mic doesnt. Not being able to activate with a controller button is terrible, and on top of that vocal activation seems to have regressed back to RB2. I have to yell loud enough that my voice was hoarse after one foo fighters song from screaming during the windows with hit-or-miss success getting the activation to work. I can barely follow a path, squeezing is damned near out of the question.

All I can say is I hope there is a patch for vocals and soon. At least with guitar and drums I can use alternate instruments, but vocals is pretty unplayable right now on PS4.

I've been using the Xbone RB4 strat with the included batteries and while I seemed to have issues with dropped strums early on, it seems to work perfectly well after a few hours use and now any misses seem to be purely my fault. Maybe it has a small break-in period?

At least you're on PS4 so you can play on IONs.

On the plus side I just updated the firmware on my strat and drums and was amazed at how easy it was. They were instantly recognized by my PC's bluetooth, connected right away, then it was 2 clicks and done.

I'm definitely going through an adjustment phase as this is my first RB guitar. I would usually play with a GH one.

The strum bar is great. Not squishy at all and the silence is perfect for me as I share an apartment with my gf and the clicking would annoy her.

The thing which Im struggling with is the size of the frets. I think the gap from green to orange is slightly bigger than a GH guitar. This has made some solos with GRYO sections problematic.

Also the hard "bar" where the green fret meets the head is a small annoyance. I feel like it's going to rub my hand eventually.

The OD activation button is okay for me but the whammy feels to big and slow to snap back. I prefer the GH:WoR guitar overall but perhaps will get used to the strat in a few days.

This was my experience too.

I love the buttons on the new strat. They are vastly better than my RB2 start. This is the first iteration that I think I can tolerate. I miss my x-plorers but this thing is so quiet its a joy to play. I bet it will hold up better too. Definitely alt strum for a bit to break in the strum bar in. I'm playing terribly right now to be honest but I'm working with not only the new guitar but a totally new set up so I have to play around for a bit before I can truely give a solid opinion. So far I love the guitar but I'm 4 starring songs that I think I should 5 star so...

Tried using Destroyer pedal with stock RB4 pedal for double bass. No luck. Anyone know what's up?
