The Gameolgical Society (a fantastic gaming blog you should all be reading) posted this longform retrospective on the development, success, and decline of Rock Band. Incredible stuff.

I like Rap AND Metal. They're similar in many ways. Wanna fight about it?

The only thing really missing from it is any mention of the RBN. Maybe I missed it (I read the thing over a few sittings, so I may have skipped it by accident). But really, the RBN is an awesome accomplishment and represents ~half of the DLC for the game, so to not mention it seems a disservice. Otherwise, really good. |

Quote: | Songs aren’t the only lost dreams sitting in the Rock Band ashes. “My greatest regret that we never got in—and it’s my deepest regret because we were so close to getting it into every Rock Band game—was singing along with guitar solos,” Teasdale said. “We had all the information in for it, especially for Rock Band 3. We had the accurate note charting for the pro guitar that we could match pitch-wise into the vocals. I think it would have been amazing, the same way we had other cool vocal scoring methods, if you could just sing along with the guitar solo like anyone does anyway.” |

I have always felt Rock Band 3 alienated both the casual player and the competitive player at the same time.
More hardware, harder difficulty, and a huge investment in a library many had accrued over the years to keep involved - not to mention the saturated rock band market after 6 previous RB titles - scared away the casual player
Lack of head to head - single, saturated leaderboards - and broken full band scoring hurt the competitive landscape. (also hurt by the saturated market)
I never had a problem with Pro at the root of it all. I just felt it needed to be removed from the 5 button world. It caused way too many permutations of scoring and required upgrading songs by all 4 members of an online band.
I never had a problem with enhancements - more so the change for the sake of change argument. RB3 did so many things right (menus, savings solo scores in band play, extra stat tracking on songs), but taking competitive edge off the game to appeal to a casual gamer who was left behind 3 RB titles ago really hurt.
Also...
I truly believe L:RB was the title that killed Rock Band. Cheesy, uninnovative, half-assed money-grubbing release for the sake of release _________________
