Okay, I can't hit the Hammer Ons in Rock Band to save my life. I mean, I can distinguish them from the normal notes (which is somewhat tough to do already) but when I hit them they don't register.

I'm trying to beat the Hard Career and I'm stuck on Flirting with Disaster because I can't do Hammer Ons.

Any songs on Expert to practice?

They're no different than GH hammer-ons, except for their appearance. They're a little less forgiving, but I would just practice them if i were you.

you also kind of need to press the note as it comes, unlike guitar hero where you can hold the note down for a period before the hammer on comes, on RB you have to tap it somewhat precisely.

I noticed that last night. You can't hold down the next hammer note and wait for it to come, you have to touch the button in time with the music. That was screwing me up for a while too until I caught on.

If you're got an HD TV make absolutely sure that the timing is correct. Other than that, and the songs listed above if you downloaded the Wolfmother song, play that in practice at a slow speed.
