So I am in the final year of a Computer Science degree at the University of Waterloo, and I just finished taking a Graphics course. Everyone in the course has to do a final graphical project of some kind. A lot of people do simulations, ray tracers (to draw 3D images), and some do games.

Due to my rampant music game nerdery, I decided to make a prototype of a game that I've wanted to exist for a long time. Saxophone Hero!

Short video with sound:

Here's a longer video with no sound (it was messing up my recording and getting out of sync) that shows some of the models more closely:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qC5WhZ96OI8

The game is made entirely from scratch using OpenGL and has cel shading, shadows, animations, advanced instrument models :P, reflections, particle effects, etc.

The song is the intro to Giant Steps by John Coltrane.

Yeah - I don't actually have a saxophone, so I recorded myself saying something as close as I could to a terrible sax noise. :P

The saxophone noises should've been this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1kLxLdtIiE

Other than that, pretty great.

Wow! This is my intended major and to see that something like this can come out of four years of work excites me greatly. How much did you know when you went into college?

I saw Waterloo and figured it would be good.

You just need pro mode and I'm sold ;)

I knew next to nothing about programming (besides being good at math). I actually started university in a math program before switching to CS because I liked the classes. It's definitely possible to get this far in four years, although I've also had a few internships on the side to build my skills.

It is one small leap for a man, but one Giant Steps for musicgamekind.

Doesn't that song have some crazy solos or something? Where are they?

Dude. CS488 represent! Did you take it with Kaplan?

This brings back memories of staying in the CG lab for a week straight to finish up my own project...
