Is it me or does Mary Jane's Last Dance sound exactly like Dani California by RHCP? 0_o |

I was waiting for someone to ask this
They have the same chord progression. In fact, I believe there was a bit of controversy regarding Dani California ripping off the aforementioned song when it was released. _________________

Which is a complete crock of shit if you ask me. First, the chord progression isn't exactly the same. The IV chord in "Mary Jane" is major while the IV chord in "Dani" is minor. Second, there are only twelve notes to choose from, so unless you do something completely unconventional, chances are it's gonna sound similar to something that's been done before. That's a big part of what music is: taking something that's already been done by someone else and making it your own. /rant
Anyway, apologies for not getting the chart preview links up right away. I was up all night doing a take-home exam, then I had to head home for the holiday. (Happy Thanksgiving!) _________________

No, but it's pretty close, and the rhythmic delivery of the vocals is pretty similar too. I can certainly see why people would think it. However Petty himself doesn't appear to have been bothered.

While there are only 12 notes, I think there are many more chords, and when you combine those chords with the number of ways to present a rhythm, the number goes that much higher.
But I think it's very hard for any musician to stay completely free of "pollution". I think what matters is the intent, and I'm not sure that RHCP had any bad intent. _________________
