|
|
When: December 9th, 2009
Where: San Francisco
What: Play Rock Band 2 on the main stage at the DNA Lounge at the price of a donation to Child's Play.
More Info: http://umloud.org/
I'm posting this as I now work in San Francisco and would be able to attend this so I'm wondering if anyone else would like to go rock the stage with me. _________________

I'll be there! Already working on getting a band together with some of my housemates, but if you need anyone to fill space in your band, I can certainly volunteer my services there, too. |

Didn't I meet you at the Hard Rock Cafe GH:A tournament in SF? I don't have a band at the moment, trying to get ahold of Wedge to see if she is interested in going and she might be able to drag witwix along so we'll see. _________________

This is saddening, because I will be in CA, but not until after X-Mas. Have fun! _________________

As far as I know, at least some of the NorCal contingent is slated to be there: myself, Ealasaid, Hitoshura, and pmswedge. I don't know if any of us have gotten our acts together enough to make the donation-plunge towards playing on the stage or anything, but it is not outside the realm of possibility. _________________

It would be great to finally get to meet you guys. The venue is a mile and a half away from my work so I would just go there after work. The only thing putting a cramp in my time is BART's schedule, which I don't think goes past midnight.
youhas, don't you two live in Pleasanton or something? I'm living in Livermore now. _________________

We live in Santa Clara, smack in the middle of the 101-880-237 triangle; I work in Sunnyvale and she works in Alviso. It's a lifestyle geared towards short commutes and blandly suburban existence! Which means that this event will entail a certain quantity of "unhappily slog up 101 in commute traffic" - feh. But such is life! _________________

My name is Seg, and I'm the co-producer for Ümloud!
It's really great when I see people talk about the show in places I didn't already promote at! Please ask me anything you want to know about the event! Though a few things I want to be clear about after reading the thread.
There will be two stages of Rock Band. One in the Lounge room that's free to play. The other is on the concert stage which will require a donation to play on. We ask for a $10 door donation, but no one will be turned away for not paying.
I want to stress that this isn't a competition, it's a performance. We want people to perform a song at the event. This way more people can have a great time! The ultimate band package is just $30 a person where you get the Rock Star treatment, gift bags, and much more! _________________

@ImaCarrot:
Yes, you did!
@Anamanfan:
Thank you for co-producing this, I'm really looking forward to it. Quick question about the Ultimate Band Package vs. the Still Pretty Awesome but Otherwise Standard Band Package -- the handy comparison chart notes that we can't reserve a song ahead of time with the Standard Band Package. What does that mean? Can a song only be performed once over the course of the night on the main stage?
Also, is it still true that there are 12 Ultimate Band slots available? I'm very tempted to pony up, but I also haven't decided on a song or a band name or even been able to gather up which of my friends are going to be able to make it. So I'm trying to figure out how much time I have to procrastinate.

Yeah, I'll definitely be going to this. That's cool that there will be two stages, but the extra treatment with the Band Packages sounds quite promising.
Very glad to see events like this happen in the SF Bay Area. _________________

Correct. For the Main Stage only, once a song is played (or reserved), it can not be played again. Harmonix is flying people and consoles over that have every song playable in Rock Band 2. All DLC, all importable RB1/Lego. There's really no reason to allow a 2x play of songs.
Stage B on the other hand is no-fuss. Will have all songs as well and switch to Beatles for part of the night.

Nope, I'm at 10 now. If you know you're going to do it, buy the pass. I get updates from DNA on who bought passes every Monday, so you'll have a few days to tell me the details. _________________

So, did anyone else sign up for an Ultimate Band Package? (I'd also be curious about anyone who bought a Standard Package but is intending to put on a show) I grabbed one and currently am freaking out about choreographing our performance. Never tried to plan for showmanship instead of just hitting all the little colored notes, so I have no idea if anything I'm thinking of will actually go over well.
Signed up as The Hambrose Burnsides, playing "My Hero" by the Foo Fighters (unless my bandmates overrule me). It has a cool drum part and seems like it would be reasonably easy for the crowd to get into. |

Your promoter here with some advice that I hope can help.
Above all, it's the vocalist that makes the show. It's the one person in the band who has most of the attention and the one person who has the greatest flexibility on the stage.
When I sent out the e-mails saying the vocalist should know the lyric, I wasn't joking. Yes the screens will give you cues, but the best performances are ones where you give the impression that you know the song. Once the vocalist knows the lyric enough, s/he can go about and look at the audience and put more emotion into the song.
For the rest of the band, they need to loosen up. Yes, they have to foucs more attention to playing, but put some expression into the playing.
Hope this helps! _________________

Thanks for hosting, Anamanfan! The night was lots of fun. I ended up playing Rock & Roll Band and Sin Wagon on the main stage. Hope to see Umloud again next year. My band will have to get the Ultimate Band package next time.

Thanks a lot, Hitoshura! It was definitely a blast. You did Rock & Roll Band with youhas, right? youhas, sorry for being so confused when we chatted about your performance later in the evening -- I actually hadn't seen it because we were being herded over to the photo booth at that point. However, I remember standing off on the side in my Lego head thinking, "Holy shit, that vocalist is killing it." You were awesome, ridiculously so. Way to go!
And a million thank yous to you, too, Seg. That shit was the bomb -- congratulations on putting together such a well-run and absolutely amazing event for such a good cause. Can't wait until next year! |
