I've got an idea. Keep the system setup for G+B, D, V as three different categories. Then, you could have a 4th category for G+B+D+V. While some people may say that this favors guitar people (two guitar scores in the fourth category) I beg to differ. If you miss one phrase in vocals, you lose at least 6,000 points. If you miss one note in Guitar or Drums (unless in a solo) you lose at least 1,425 points. If you miss one note in Bass, you lose at least 3,625 points. This puts more strain on getting 100% on parts that are usually the easiest to FC anyway without being forced to squeeze like a madman. That way you don't have to squeeze every last 8 points out of an easy part because you'd like to work on the hard part. The other three categories are still there to reward the squeezers though.

I just think that if you blow away the field on a song like Painkiller-guitar or Panic Attack-drums and didn't have time to squeeze on the other parts, you should be rewarded.

Thoughts?

That's an interesting idea ccmoose - having individual ranks plus combined total rank both be weighed. That's kind of like having your cake and eating it too.

Deimos, were you going to take the data from the first 4 rounds and show what standings would look like using different scoring mechanisms?

Yeah, that's what I was suggesting back here:

Completely different suggestion, based on my mistaken idea of how this league worked before I took part in it last season. What if a fifth category were added that is combined score across all four instruments? (Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly, but isn't that's what's used as a tiebreaker for playoffs anyway?) And I realize that vocals usually has the highest total score available, so that would require picking a song each week that has a different instrument with the highest score available. It's not a whole lot different from the spotlight instrument concept jerridthomas used in his OMB rivalry. Not necessarily extra points for winning that instrument like his did, but having a different instrument with the highest score available each week would mean that the person who really is doing the best on all four instruments is going to be the one that gets the most points in this category.

It still has that issue of guitar specialists having two weeks where their instrument is getting them more points, but it may be an additional, non-drastic way of leveling that out a bit. However, this does also kind of eliminate bass without eliminating it, you know? Since the bass scores are usually fairly close together, they're effectively not figured into the total.

Just as thought as we're tossing ideas out there.

I agree with you in the first one, but i am mostly a bass person, i always usually play bass songs and espically in RB2 the scores in the Expert Bass League have been very spread out in some cases depending on the songs.

I know, but mine is slightly different than yours. Yours has five categories and mine has four. But you were my inspiration if you will.

How is the winner for OMB determined in the playoffs? Are Guitar and Bass still lumped together?

No one yell at me. I looked and could not find it anywhere. You can call me an idiot for not being able to find this, but if so, please provide a link of some sort.

The fairest way would be to differentiate guitar and bass somehow... maybe mandate upstrums?

I think I was among the biggest whiners about this previously, so I'm glad to see the rule change. It's not entirely fair (like throwing out bass completely would be), but it works. It'll be interesting, regardless.

Internetguy and myself can both drum and sing. Therefore, I propose that guitar and bass are combined, and vocals and drums are combined.

Sorry, one of those wise arse days

I'm fine with whatever you guys end up with for the rules.

Actually...I had a real idea now. What about playing all instruments and then dropping your worst score? That way you are playing all of the instruments (still doing the One Man Band thing), but now you aren't diluting the guitar.

If someone is terrible at guitar but able to manage on bass, they wouldn't be so devastated by a hard guitar week, as they can work on squeezing or whatever on the bass.

Guitarist won't have a kickass score diluted by a lower bass score.

Would this put guitarists at a disadvantage?

I like this idea, but you'd probably have to do total score with that system. I had a similar thought, but instead of dropping one instrument I thought maybe you would be required to multitask for one run (so you would play G, D, and B+V e.g.).

The only problem with that is you are penalizing people that can't rig up a good mic stand/don't have a headset. I remember the troubles I had trying to get a mic stand working until the point that I had to get a headset.

If they did this, I would just purposely not even submit a score for vocals, and it would turn into a 3 instrument league for me. Vocals is what I'm worst at, so if I didn't even have to play it and it didn't affect me, then I would be smooth sailing.
