A guide to calculating NPS:

I've noticed that a good percentage of the posts in this thread are users inquiring of the NPS of certain sections, which is why I believe it seems fit for a short guide to be added to the OP. I suggest it looks something like this.

_________________________________________________________

In order to easily calculate the exact NPS of a section, you first need a note chart. Note charts for Drums are located here.

On each note chart, you'll notice that there are three types of lines. There are thin, faint grey lines, thick, bold grey lines, and black lines. The black lines divide up the measures. Those aren't important. The thick grey lines divide up the beats. Pay attention to those. The thin, faint grey lines divide each beat into half-beats. Those aren't really important either.

Quite often, above the notes, you will see a musical note symbol, and equals sign, and a number (refer to the visual at the bottom). For example (having an asterick represent a muscial note), *=182. This tells you the BPM, or Beats Per Minute. So in this example, there are 182 BPM. Sometimes, the Beats Per Minute will not be shown above the notes. That means that the song's been going at that BPM for a while, which therefore means that you need to look backwards to find the BPM. You read notecharts like you read a book (in many parts of the world). Start at the upper left corner, go across the row to the upper right, and then move to the next row down. You should end at the bottom right. If you're going backwards, go the opposite way until you see a BPM displayed, and use that BPM. BPM only changes if there is a *=[number] above the notes. If there isn't, the song will be at a constant BPM for that part.

You just need one more piece of information, the Notes Per Beat. One very important thing to note about Notes Per Beat is that you should count pad notes and kick pedal notes seperately. If you want to find the speed of a roll, ignore the kick notes. If you want to find the speed of a kick section, ignore the pad hits.

For a reference, take a look at the Young Man Blues (Live at Leeds) Expert note chart, located here.

Look at Measure 9. The Measure numbers are the small red numbers just above the notes (refer to the visual at the bottom). Let's figure out the speed of the first insane roll. At the beginning, there's a GO followed by a bunch of reds. Ignore that kick note. There are six notes per beat. Why? You might be able to tell that the green note is directly on the beat line. Count that one. There are five reds in between that GO (which is on the first beat line) and the next beat line. The sixth red in on the next beat line. Since you counted the green note that was on the first beat line, you do not count this one, because it would go in the next beat. So there is one green and five reds, which makes six notes per beat.

If you look above the notes, you can see that the BPM is 172. Divide that by 60 to get the Beats Per Second, which is 2.866666666. Multiply that by the Note Per Beat to obtain the NPS, which in this case is 17.2

Here's a visual:
