While this is awesome, I hope this isn't a stunt to hit 500 the easy way.

Love the song. Harmonix ftw.

I've seen the chart video, and I still don't believe it's real. This is too amazing and unprecedented to be real. I can't believe it until I see it myself.

Yap, this song's easy:

And that was with a broken kick pedal!

Anyway, am I correct in assuming that this is some sort of light-hearted 9/11 tribute considering Colbert's overt Americanity?

Just a note - it's StePHEN Colbert.

Also, between Still Alive and this, I think Harmonix is pulling ideas for free DLC straight out of my head.

Ah you must be right, considering the community message is also "This is a good day to play all the most heartfelt and meaningful songs in Rock Band.".

I dont quite understand whats so awesome about this song though...

As I understand it, Stephen Colbert is currently in a popular (in a geeky sort of way at least) American cable TV show called The Colbert Report which isn't so big in Europe... I think I can watch it in the UK a day or two late on some sort of channel. I've seen it a few times and videos like Rush playing Rock Band for the show. I didn't know he had a musical career in the 80s.

Huh, that's a weird thing to do. A song about stalking?

His 80s musical career isn't real, it's a joke on the show.

The Colbert Report is a satire of American political pundit shows like The O'Reilley Factor, and Colbert acts as a mockingly patriotic and "AMERICAN" host. I don't know if it's something Europeans would get, but to any American who watches the show, releasing this on 9/11 makes absolutely perfect sense.
