RB3 Wii Drum Problem

So my problem is that when I play drums on RB3, it lags. But, I'm not playing on an HD TV. I use a RB1 Wii drumset, with a black pedal, I don't think the pedal would have anything to do with it, but you never know.

Is the problem just for the Wii?

I'm looking to buy a new kit, but haven't kept up with Rock Band much since 2 came out. My question is, what's the most reliable drum kit (disregarding the ION)? By reliable, I mean lowest deficiency rate, sturdiest against beatings, etc. I will do light modding (penny, sock, etc.) if the set requires it. Specific models (EL, QM, SL) taken into account as well.
