With Pinball being the new best powerup for most songs, I decided to do a little experiment by recording the pinball's movement to look for consistent patterns. Some of the results were quite interesting.
In order to do this experiment, I tracked the amount of lanes the pinball moved after each hit, starting with the first hit and continuing until I lost the pinball. I dropped any pinball run with less than 10 hits (after the initial hit) and kept going until I had 20 different runs to look at. I used the song BRODYQUEST (5 lanes) for testing purposes, but the pinball should function the same way regardless of song choice.
Here were the raw test results from the experiment. The numbers on each row represent the number of lane changes after each pinball hit.
4434344434
344553444454343
333355233333344444
44444443433
443343434344554444
33443333444444
43344443543544
4224353343355
3324534444454
23444444345
4443454443334
34235433445434343
233544454455
2333345433364444
333354334445
4433343434445
34223333445444
3343233444
34334442434433444453
4423434435
If you look into this giant wall of numbers, a few patterns begin to become clear:
2-lane jumps tend to be followed by large streaks of 3-lane jumps.
3-lane jumps are often found next to 5-lane jumps. This may need more testing to confirm.
4-lane jumps tend to occur more frequently and in longer streaks than anything else.
5-4-3 lane jump patterns are fairly common.
On extremely rare occasions, the pinball can jump 6 lanes after hitting a certain speed. Only one of these jumps was recorded throughout the experiment.
Based on the five best pinball runs recorded, the pinball moves an average distance of 3.7 lanes per hit.
Here are some interesting statistics I picked up:
Best pinball run recorded: 20 hits (not counting the first)
Largest 2-lane jump streak: 2
Largest 3-lane jump streak: 6
Largest 4-lane jump streak: 7
Largest 5-lane jump streak: 2
Largest 6-lane jump streak: 1
Latest 2-lane jump: After 8th hit
Earliest 5-lane jump: After 4th hit
Earliest 6-lane jump: After 12th hit
If anyone else wants to look for pinball movement patterns, feel free to do so. Pinball theory could be the future of Blitz as we know it. _________________

Well on 5 lane songs, the trick is to get the pinball doing the 44444 movement from drums/bass to keys back to back. Other than that I find pinball kinda random and just look at the rebounds to determine where the next hit is.
I might record some pinball runs later and see what I can find now that I've gotten better at it. _________________

Woo, statistics
Even though it probably won't help too much (as the rebounds are still too random), this is pretty interesting to see. Some probabilities would be nice _________________

Seriously. Maybe it's because I suck at pinball, but it's really OP now; all the Blitz tournament scores on RBW seem to be done with pinball-sync. Makes me not want to play if I stand little chance of doing well unless it's a long song or solo filled. |

I don't see how much of this is useful when you have to remember not only this, but concentrate on being able to hit the pinball at a ridiculous speed. _________________

I never posted my findings from grinding Moonlight Sonata a couple of months ago, so I figured I would post them now.
The first thing I tested was how early and late the purple note for the pinball could spawn. After 100 attempts, I found that the pinball never spawned before the 15th note or after the 46th note. I'm not sure if the pinball spawns differently in songs with more than one lane, but there seems to be a limit to both good and bad luck here.
An "optimal" pinball run gave me 37,053,184 points, which was only #88 cross-platform. This means that the change to pinball early after Blitz's release made any top pinball score in 1-lane songs impossible. The good news is that the pinball starts at a slower speed than it originally did, making it much easier to get more bounces in. However, the theoretical scoring limit is slightly lower.
I also found that the pinball stopped speeding up at a certain point. To see how fast the pinball was going, I used BPM Tapper (http://www.all8.com/tools/bpm.htm) and determined that the pinball's bounces were equal to quarter notes at 106 BPM by tapping along to the bounces in the later half of a Moonlight Sonata pinball video. This is equal to 1.7666... bounces per second or one bounce every 0.566 seconds.
The only thing I don't know yet is when the pinball hits this terminal velocity. If I had a slow-motion pinball video to work with, I could more accurately determine this. Right now, it appears that the pinball reaches top speed somewhere near the 30th bounce. It may be possible that the pinball reaches a consistent movement pattern after that point, but it's hard to tell.
Here's a chart of which note the pinball spawned on throughout 100 attempts if anyone wants to look at it.
