I have a Roland KD-8 that I'm trying to hook up to my ION kit and I've been using a modified version of this layout to incorporate a potentiometer:

Here's my setup (sorry if the image is huge):

The left side is what the KD-8 would plug into, and the right side is what the ION kit plugs into. Here's a components list:

100k Linear Taper Potentiometer
2N2222A NPN Transistor
1N914 Silicon Switching Diode
20 Gauge Wire
2x 1/4" Mono jack

Currently, the problem I'm running into is that this setup (with potentiometer) is not very sensitive. If I remove the potentiometer, the setup is extremely sensitive and overhits quite frequently (usually can't build a 3x combo).

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get somewhere in the middle?

EDIT: Resized massive image.
