If Welcome to the Family following the Ozzy pack is any indication of a trend, then HMX is back on form when it comes to charting metal guitar solos.

The solos in the new ozzy pack were a lot better (in my opinion) than the first ozzy pack, and the solo in Welcome to the Family is a damn sight better than Beast and the Harlot or Bat Country.

This seems to be a good sign.

Anyways, pretty good week this week. Didn't get the Live songs because while I recognize the songs, I've never really liked them a great deal and they don't look fun enough to be worth it from a playability standpoint. I totally understand why other people would want them. They're pretty memorable 90's alt-rock songs.

A-Ha and Chumbawamba, on the other hand... Those songs are just fantastic. Similar to Live in that they aren't that great to play (on guitar, at least), but they look pretty fun on drums and both look pretty decent on keys (Take on Me is obviously the better of the two, but Tubthumping has keys all the way through and some cool horn lines authored to them as well).

I've heard the song, yet it somehow still surprised me when Unholy Confessions didn't have a guitar solo. Still pretty fun, and great on protar/bass.

I already mentioned Welcome to the Family's solo, but I neglected to mention how much fun that song is outside of the solo (on guitar). It's full of great riffs.

Agreed, Welcome to the Family is awesome. Also, whoever did the harmony vocal charts for Tubthumping and Take On Me did a fucking fantastic job of squeezing every possible part out of there. I love them both. They could have used a little bit of this squeezing on some of the Queen songs with more than three parts, particularly Hammer To Fall for example.

That song has three full parts in the harmony lines of the chorus ("We don't waste no time at all", etc.) but only the two harmony parts sing it in the RB chart. This is seemingly because, in a few instances, the main line of Freddy's comes back in a little bit before they end and overlaps it a tad. However, this doesn't happen all the time, so it's just a waste of a harmony part if it doesn't. But they wanted to make the charting consistent, so the lead line never sings these parts at all, but there's actually precedent in that same pack for changing which harmony part a particular vocal line covers in the later choruses of I Want It All (when Freddy's main line is throwing in little lines like "Yeah, I want it"). I would much rather you simply cut the lead line short bit, or even delay the entering of the followup line. Presumably, you have separate vocal stems and you can do this, but maybe they thought "Oh we can't touch Freddie's track"? Granted, I can see that argument too.

This is what I mean by squeezing as much out of the vocal parts as possible. It feels like they really did this well in the chorus of Take On Me. The end of Tubthumping is a little different, as there's simple multiple parts going on altogether. This is more just careful picking of what parts get charted when you have to choose to leave some out. I think they made good choices there. Each vocal "thing" going on gets one vocal line dedicated to it, even though there are harmonies within said "things". This song also has the advantage that these vocal "things" are introduced separately earlier in the song, and then brought together at the very end. This gives them a chance to be charted fully in their earlier incarnations, and then switched to a sparse single-line charting in order to cover everything at the end. Nice bit of songwriting, natch.

Also, I put way too much thought into the analysis of vocal harmony charting...

Solo or no solo, Take On Me's pro keys chart has got to be the best thing I've played in Rock Band in a long long time. Perfect challenge level, perfect feel, and the song is awesome. You can't go wrong. It's probably the only song I'll be picking up from this week; Tubthumping is an intriguing one to be sure, but other than some groovy vocals, I'm not entirely convinced that it'll translate to a rhythm game format. If the consensus is that I'm wrong about that, then I might give it a whirl.

Take On Me is totally the song of the week. Lightning Crashes was pretty fun to emo-sing to though.

Tubthumping doesn't translate terribly well to guitar or bass. Keys are pretty repetitive for the most part, but they did chart horns to it which livens things up toward the end. Drums are actually very worthwhile. Fun, syncopated beats, some nice disco-rhythms, etc.

Vocals are the highlight, but if you're a drummer you can't really go wrong with it either.

If you're a guitarist, I can't stress enough how fun Welcome to the Family is. Say what you will about the song itself, but it's probably my favorite A7X song on guitar, and that's saying a lot given how fun A7X generally is to play.

I know most people aren't gonna take much notice of the Live songs this week, but if you're a bassist primarily, these songs are good fun. If you're looking for challenge, they're pretty easy to be honest, but in terms of fun factor, these songs have plenty of it, with fun patterns and lots of hammer-ons.
