|
|
UPDATED 3/21/10 - Click Here
The Rock Band Network (RBN) Store has recently launched in Rock Band 2 for Xbox 360 with over 100 tracks available for purchase. The number of songs grows daily and RBN has opened the doorways to discover new music.
If you were around and remember this announcement from July, a group of ScoreHero staff along with a few others and myself had attended a Harmonix master class and formed Rhythm Authors LLC as an authoring company to help artists, bands and record labels bring music to Rock Band. We've since had the opportunity to partner with labels and work with some incredible artists and bands that we are very happy to now share with you through Rock Band.
Our initial thought for ScoreHero was to exclusively track our Rhythm Authors clients. But having been a part of an amazing community from day one, watching and helping it grow, and seeing first-hand the caliber of both music and authoring talent that's present elsewhere, we simply cannot neglect it.
However, we do need to draw a line somewhere as there are expected to be thousands of songs available in months time, and we do wish to maintain some advantage to our clients. So with that said:
How is RBN score-tracking set up?
A new game, "RBN", has been added alongside "Rock Band 2" in the list of games. Its setlist layout mimics that of a disc-based game with DLC, such that all Rhythm Authors songs are broken down into the usual difficulty-based tiers, and all other RBN songs that become tracked are placed into a "Community-Enabled Songs" tier, which brings up the next point.
Which songs become enabled?
This is completely up to you! A huge, brand new, automatically-updating section has been added to the Store page listing every approved song for RBN, including its artist, genre, release date, and video preview (when available).
A song requires 250 points from the community to become enabled. This does NOT need to all come from a single person. As points are collected, the score-tracking status of each is displayed for others to watch or help chip-in.
Many have been asking for more reason to spend contribution points, and with over 41,000 unspent points amongst the community I can certainly see why. This is your chance to promote the music you enjoy by using your ScoreHero contribution to enable leaderboards for everyone.
How quickly does it take effect?
Upon reaching the 250 point threshold for a song, the system will automatically update to add the song's leaderboards and score-tracking will go live.
If you're ever the last contributor, you'll see it in action!
What if I represent a band or authoring group and want to enable my own songs?
In this case, please send me a PM with your interest. I've implemented additional features and can give out discounted rates and further tools to help you promote your band or clients through ScoreHero.
How much promotion does this offer?
ScoreHero sees thousands of viewers daily and millions of pageviews each month.
Unlike other songs tracked on ScoreHero, RBN songs include video previews and direct purchase links embedded across all major score-tracking pages for easy access to see, try, and buy while naturally browsing through our scores! Wiki song pages are also enabled, which opens the door for the competitive crowd to strategize and share optimal paths. :)
What do I get for contributing?
For each song that you spend 10 or more points towards, you will gain permanent recognition as a contributor on both the Store page, and at the top of the song's rankings pages for all to see and thank for making the song available!
Can I refund or move points over to a different song?
At this time, no. Points are neither transferrable nor refundable. I may soon add the ability to reclaim spent points towards songs that are still awaiting more points, but please don't assume that I will.
Thanks to everyone for your support. RBN has been an unbelievably long ride and I'm thrilled to finally be posting this announcement and moving forward from months of various betas to full public launch. Please do yourself a favor and check out the RBN Store, play some demos, and find new gems to add to your collection. There's a lot of great stuff you might not expect.
Word of advice: do NOT judge songs based on the store's preview clips as a sample of audio quality. Play the free demos instead. Harmonix is looking into the issue, but they sound quite bad right now.
And lastly, let me know of any unusual site behavior as a lot has been added and bugs are very possible.
Enjoy! _________________

would it be safe to assume that PS3/Wii would get score tracking for all their RBN songs, since it sounds like we would only be getting select few compared to everything that the 360 would get. But this is depending on how "select" the PS3 RBN songs are and how many they actually bring over. |

I'm happy to see this up, but I'm going to be honest, I don't like this 250 point bit... I doubt the song list will keep growing at this rate, I'm sure it'll calm down soon. Perphaps get a few new staff dedicated to RBN tracking? (or is it a bandwidth issue instead of a "too much to do" issue?) _________________

I think we'll just have to wait and see what HMX does with PS3/Wii songs before we can make a decision. The way I see it right now though, if a song appears on the PS3/Wii and it has not been enabled on the 360 side, it wouldn't exactly be fair to enable it on the PS3/Wii sides would it? On the flip side, if the song is already enabled for tracking on the 360 side, it makes sense that it would be for the others if the song ever makes the jump. _________________

This is cool!
I like the way this is set up, JC. Moving forward in bold, new directions and with innovative ideas. I can't wait to start entering scores _________________

Awesome.
Can I safely assume the preview videos are still OTW? I get a 404. |

Well, at least I found a way to get rid of my last contribution point.
That's 1 more towards Children of Nova - The Complexity of Light. _________________

Would it be possible to make the store list able to be sorted by how many points are remaining to unlock a song? _________________

Oops, forgot one of the uploads.
They should be working now.

Regarding the points it's a bit of a combination. But most importantly it's to have a general focus on what the community wants, rather than 3000 leaderboards when only a few hundred are touched. The numbers aren't overwhelming right now, but they will be.
With over 41,000 unspent points available now, and the potential to acquire more we'd thought 250 was a reasonable number as a collective effort per song. We'll of course see how things go and adjust if necessary. _________________

Yeah, I think I just have no sense of what a relatively reasonable number of contribution points are. I'll save my incessant bitching for a few weeks after I see the rate of songs unlocking >__> _________________

It's possible, and something I wanted to add. Unfortunately it's not easy as the data is separated across 2 different databases with no way to join at that level.
I know what to do to make it happen though. I'll try to add that later tonight or tomorrow, as it would be very useful. _________________

Ok JC, this was a pretty good idea. Maybe 250 points is a little much, but we will see.
Idea: Is there a way we could get contribution points instead of donations? Like gain a point per expert FC or something? I think that would be an interesting and interactive way to do it.
Again, super good idea my man. I usually just view your updates and move on, but I felt the need to tell you that I think this is a great idea. Maybe this will spark me to play a little bit more again. _________________

I'm not sure if I'm overly keen on this idea. This pretty much leaves all the decisions on what songs are going to be enabled for scoretracking up to the handful of people that either have a crap load of contribution points, or are willing to spend money to get their songs promoted. Doesn't seem very democratic to me.
May I suggest, if this is the ultimate decision you're going to be making in terms of enabling songs, that you guys figure out some way to make getting points a LOT lot easier? Also, 250 points is a pretty huge threshold...some people WILL have to pay money for points that they want to spend, and a combined 250 dollar charge to get a song enabled for scoretracking seems a tad...excessive.
I have a few more opinions on this whole new system, but...I dunno, for fear of getting flamed and banned from the forums, I'm going to keep said opinions to myself. I'll just end with saying that I'm not a fan of any system that pretends to be democratic while really just putting the power in the hands of an enabled few. I know Scorehero is a privately owned site, and it costs a ridiculous amount of money to keep up, but I also feel that Scorehero has, in the past, put huge emphasis and pride on the wonderful community that we've created, and I kiiinda feel like this is hindering that sense of community.
Only the opinion and observations of one man, however. Ultimately it's the decisions of the site owners, and really I can always just scoretrack the songs I want on Rockband.com =P _________________
