Maybe I was hallucinating, but playing bass in multiplayer last night, I noticed that I went past the normal x4 multiplier, and got all the way up to x6!? ..and once I got past 4, it would flash text along the lines of 'bass groove'. The problem is, I didn't see it go to x12 or anything when I triggered overdrive.

Seems they really changed around the way the bass scoring/system works....I'll have to investigate more.

yeah bass does get a 6X combo as it max. wheras the other instruments stay at 4X. i dont know why they made bass 6X, i thought it was because generally there are less notes in a bass riff, and the bigger combo is to make up for it
as for overdrive making it 12X i dunno

Ahh, you beat me to it. Yeah, Harmonix thought that since there are (usually) less notes with the bass guitar that they needed to compensate, hence the 6x multiplier.

from the wikipedia article on RB:

The bass guitar player can raise his/her multiplier to 6x, as opposed to the traditional 4x, because as noted by a GameSpot preview, "bass can get a little dry sometimes."

this makes sense, but i don't know if there is any documented info anywhere on why they upped the bass multiplier to x6...

It makes sense though. Good bass is all about a steady groove, and it makes it more important to keep the combo up on the bass as opposed to the other instruments.

It won't say x12 for bass for a few reasons:

You can only play bass in multi player
in multi player mode, the overdrive is tracked up by the score, not by the individual instruments

You can get a x12, but it won't say it. You have to combine the multiplier by the score and the one by your individual instrument.

You can play bass in single player quickplay, but when I did, I was too focused on FCing with upstrums to check for the x12. I realized it might do that near the end of the song but I didnt get another chance to use OD.

I can check later. But yes, in multi, your multiplier will not change.

I've found that if you have like 2 people and one of them can FC the bass parts, you get gold stars really easily as long as you got good overdrive use. On songs with a lot of bass notes, with a 6x you can gold star with tons of mistakes. On songs with bass chords, you'll be gold starring way before the song ends. 6x for the win.

So if Drums, Guitar, and Bass all activate Overdrive at the same time, and the band multiplier is x6, does Bass get a x36 multiplier?

Essentially, yes.

And if vocals activates as well, its a x48 to each note. Im pretty sure they use a scoring system similar to GHII in that its not 25 for every note when playing multi (havent actually tried to see if this is true, just a quick observation. I think the easiest way to check this is to plug in all the instruments and an extra guitar, make some extra profiles if you have to, play say it aint so on all 4 and just hit the first note for guitar. Check the score for the one note and we can see if its different)

We actually had this going the other night with me on Bass, but I was so busy playing that I couldn't pay any attention to the score which is why I asked.

It does say x12 when you play bass in single player quickplay, yeah.

And x10 too, although I only saw that once, kind of a narrow window to get that.
