I wanna get to work on figuring out a few optimum paths for bass, but I have no idea how many beats or measures or whatever half a bar of Overdrive will get me, and I can't multitask well enough to count measures.

-A full overdrive meter lasts 32 beats, which is usually 8 measures.
-4 OD phrases completely fill the OD meter, 2 OD phrases fill half of the OD meter.
-Each beat of OD whammy generally adds one beat of energy to your meter (there are some exceptions depending on time signature and other uncertain factors).

Many thanks, Sully. And with that, this thread can be locked, unless someone else has a question on topic. Or if they want to recommend any XBLA games for me to download; I already have Hexic HD, and I'm planning to get the full versions of Uno and Geometry Wars, but apart from that, I have no idea what's good and what sucks. EDIT: Oh, and Worms. Looks like fun.

There are definitely some "uncertain factors" there, as not all whammy bars are created equal. Some will 'syphon' energy faster than others, and I don't think it's related to the beat.

Still, I'm lousy with BPM unless it's a game like IIDX that hits you over the head with the information. For some of the songs, the OD drains so slowly you can keep it going for almost half the song, but they didn't seem to be slow enough in the beat department to attribute to that.

Still, I've been known to be completely wrong.

... and if you like old-school shooting goodness, definitely give Heavy Weapon: Atomic Tank a look in the DLC department. The free demo locks half of the special weapons, but lets you see the first 5-6 levels of the game, and it's one of my personal favorites. (Be warned that if you like what you see, the difficulty rockets up alarmingly just after the demo levels end. Think Highway Sun ===> GG&HT increase in difficulty. Yowza.)

does anyone know how the whammy works in this or is it still 7.5 beats=1/4 of overdrive?

Expanding upon my first post in this thread.... While NOT in Overdrive, each beat of whammy adds exactly one beat of energy (so 8 beats for 1/4 meaure assuming 4/4 time).

While in Overdrive, whammying OD phrases do three different things:

-The most common: the meter simply stops draining for the duration of the whammy (ie. one beat of whammy adds one beat of energy).
-Energy is added very slowly to the OD meter (ie. one beat of whammy adds slightly more than one beat of energy).
-The OD meter depletes slower than usual (ie. one beat of whammy adds slightly less than one beat of energy).

thankyou, I thought it was 8 beats, but when I was playing day late dollar short I got 1/2 OD in 7.5 beats. So I am not sure exactly how it works, maybe early whammying?
